Very nice introduction to an underrated movie. By the way, there are in fact two within-scene camera cuts in the film well after the opening scene. Apparently no one but me has ever noticed them, probably because we have always been told there are none. See if you can find them! (Hint: the cuts are placed at crucial points in the plot.)
Nope--those are among the several camera switches everybody knows about, as at that time the camera could only hold about 10 minutes of film or so. They are meant to make the film look seamless as Hitchcock acknowledged. The two cuts I'm referring to were not for that purpose, it seems. They appear to be deliberate on Hitchcock's part and done for dramatic effect.
Man, it's been way too long since I watched Rope! I defo need to watch again - thanks for reminding me. :)
You're most welcome, Meagan!

Sam, it's when the camera goes into the back of someone, right?

Thanks so much, Richard. I had a blast writing that one.
Andrew Klavan discusses this film in his latest book, The Kingdom of Cain. I think you would like it, Brad.
Thanks, Tad. I think I mentioned to you that I got to know his son, Spencer, at a conference a year or so ago. Seemed like a really great guy.
OK...now I got a listen to all your back posts. Never saw Rope, but will do so very soon. Thanks Bradley
